These are just a few tips to keep your awning in tip top shape.
1. The most common canvas on an awing is vinyl. Vinyl is naturally mildew resistant, but mildew can still get on the material on top of the dust and dirt on the awning. Best solution is to keep that awning clean. Dometic recommends an awning cleaner or a mixture of 1/4 cup dish soap, 1/4 cup bleach and five gallons fresh water. Completely cover the awning, then roll it up for five minutes while you apply the mixture to the bottom side of the awning. Open the awning and hose it off well top and bottom. Repeat if necessary. Let the awning completely dry before rolling it up. Dometic also advises : Do NOT use household cleaners, mildew removers or hard bristle brushes!
2. Periodically spray your lift handle, bottom bracket release tab and rafter and support arms with silicone spray. Always assist your lift handle by using the arms to lift as the lift handle can break with the pressure. Rubbing candle wax on all sliding surfaces will help also.
3. Periodically make sure the top and bottom bracket screws are tight. If you see seeping behind the awning rail, check for loose screws and/or peeled sealant.
4. MOST IMPORTANT - if you are not within seeing distance of your awning for any period of time, roll it up. Wind and/or rain can come up unexpectedly and your expensive awning will become a very useless parachute when it flies over your camper.
